Washington creates the Purple Heart

On this day in 1782, in Newburgh, New York, General George Washington, the commander in chief of the Continental Army, creates the “Badge for Military Merit,” a decoration consisting of a purple, heart-shaped piece of silk, edged with a narrow binding of silver, with the word Merit stitched across the face in silver. The badge was to be presented to soldiers for “any singularly meritorious action” and permitted its wearer to pass guards and sentinels without challenge. The honoree’s name and regiment were also to be inscribed in a “Book of Merit.”



Washington’s “Purple Heart” was awarded to only three known soldiers during the Revolutionary War: Elijah Churchill, William Brown and Daniel Bissell, Jr. The “Book of Merit” was lost, and the decoration was largely forgotten until 1927, when General Charles P. Summerall, the U.S. Army chief of staff, sent an unsuccessful draft bill to Congress to “revive the Badge of Military Merit.” In 1931, Summerall’s successor, General Douglas MacArthur, took up the cause, hoping to reinstate the medal in time for the bicentennial of George Washington’s birth. On February 22, 1932, Washington’s 200th birthday, the U.S. War Department announced the creation of the “Order of the Purple Heart.”



In addition to aspects of Washington’s original design, the new Purple Heart also displays a bust of Washington and his coat of arms. The Order of the Purple Heart, the oldest American military decoration for military merit, is awarded to members of the U.S. armed forces who have been killed or wounded in action against an enemy. It is also awarded to soldiers who have suffered maltreatment as prisoners of war.

Established in Canada in 2008, National Peacekeepers' Day provides an opportunity for Canadians to express the pride and respect they have toward personnel of the Canadian Armed Forces, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and provincial and municipal police forces, as well as Canadian diplomats and civilians who have worked in support of international peace and security operations.


More than 125 000 Canadian peacekeepers have participated in dozens of international efforts over the past six decades in countries all over the world. August 9 was selected as National Peacekeepers' Day to recognize the greatest single loss of Canadian lives on a peacekeeping mission, which occurred on that date in 1974.

N4T Investigators: Plea deal given to man indicted in murder of Border Patrol agent Brian Terry

One of the men charged in the murder of U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry pleaded guilty to one count of murder, Monday morning. Once a potential candidate for the death penalty after the murder of the agent, the drawn up plea deal now states that the U.S. and the defendant will ask for 360 months imprisonment, with credit for time served since his arrest in October 2012.


The Justice Department indicted Rosario Rafael Burboa Alvarez last summer in connection with the killing. Alvarez was identified as the recruiter for the rip-off crew that ran into Terry's elite BORTAC unit in the desert in December 2010. Terry was killed in the ensuing gunfight with the rip-off crew and later two AK-47 variants found at the crime scene were identified as part of the notorious Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives gunwalking operation, Operation Fast and Furious. The scandalous operation was supposed to link guns bought at a Phoenix-area gunstore to cartel gunmen trafficking the weapons to Mexico. Instead, ATF lost more than 2,000 of those weapons. Resulting congressional investigations found that the men linked to the gun purchases were being monitored by different U.S. federal agencies like DEA, the FBI and ATF, but agents weren't sharing the information with the other agencies....

The local Afghanistans who risked their lives working for British Troops, are still fighting the British government who promised those 'terps that they would be welcome to resettle out of harm's way in the UK.

For years, Afghans who worked alongside our Troops have continued to be hunted and  threatened by Taleban.

The UK Government will be forever grateful for the vital support that our locally employed Afghan civilians provided to the UK and NATO allied troops. Some of them made the ultimate sacrifice, while on operations alongside our forces.




Their efforts were distinct and pivotal to Afghanistan’s efforts to form a more secure, stable and prosperous future.  These individuals were willing to commit to a more positive vision for their country, alongside thousands of their countrymen and women in the Afghan National Security Forces. I saw the same spirit of commitment to the future of Afghanistan when I visited in June and met the most recent graduates of the Afghan National Army Officer Academy, including the first female graduates.




All of these brave people deserve our deep respect.  Recognising our connection to Afghans who worked directly with the Ministry of Defence, we have put in place a package of legal and fair policies for the brave men and women who worked with us for a significant time, and who were made redundant due to the drawdown of British Forces in Afghanistan....

911 Toxic Legacy: James Zadroga

James Zadroga who died January 5, 2006 was a New York City Police Department (NYPD) officer who died of a respiratory disease that has been attributed to his participation in rescue and recovery operations in the rubble of the World Trade Center  following the September 11th attacks.  Zadroga was the first NYPD officer whose death was attributed to exposure to his contact with toxic chemicals at the attack site.

Here we are,  all these years on, and STILL the government refuses to honor the sacrifice of so many 9/11survivors by enshrining legislation - in perpetuity - to care for those who continue to  live with the illnesses caused by their exposure to the effects of the worst terrorism on US soil.

The ailing heroes of Sept. 11, a disproportionate number of them Staten Islanders, ought not to be left to worry about the future of their vitally needed official health benefits. Making sure these survivors have the security of knowing their health needs arising from their efforts at Ground Zero will always be met is the least a grateful nation can do.



Nevertheless, under the federal government's Zadroga Act, the World Trade Center Health Program for surviving first responders and other sick victims is due to expire in September, the latest in a sequence of expiration dates which Congress has had to extend.


These benefits and the financial support provided by the September 11th Victims Compensation Fund, which is due to end in October 2016, must be made permanent.


"Our first responders answered the call of duty when our nation was under attack, and deserve to be treated by Congress as the veterans they really are," New York's Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand pointed out. "We cannot abandon the men and women who now suffer as a result of their sacrifice."


This is perfectly clear on Staten Island, which lost more than its share of victims on 9/11 and has suffered similarly ever since as the medical toll mounts....

Afghans clinging to a 'normal life' despite bloodshed


The Afghan capital Kabul has suffered a series of attacks this month that have left dozens of people dead.


The Taliban says it is behind most of the violence, and it is believed to be linked to the current splits within the group after the death of their leader Mullah Omar.


The violence has raised questions about the ability of Afghan security forces to stop such attacks after the majority of coalition forces withdrew last year.


The BBC's Shaimaa Khalil met the people affected by the recent bloodshed.

The jihadist Islamic State is out to exterminate all males perceived as homosexuals in Syria and Iraq, and it uses Facebook to track them down, the head of an international gay rights organisation to the United Nations on Monday.

During a UN Security Council meeting Monday, Jessica Stern, executive director of the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC), said ISIS has already killed at least 30 people for sodomy, meaning those who it perceived to be gays.

"We can say that the minimum number of executions for sodomy for which ISIS has claimed responsibility is 30. ISIS-established courts have claimed to punish sodomy with stoning, firing squads, beheadings, and by pushing men from tall buildings," Stern said said.

He said ISIS militants "are professional when it comes to tracking gay people. They hunt them down one by one. When they capture people, they go through the person's phone and contacts and Facebook friends."

"They are trying to track down every gay man. And it's like dominoes. If one goes, the others will be taken down, too," he said..

David Cameron lacked “the balls” to take the military action in Syria that could have prevented the rise of Islamic State, a former head of the armed forces has said.


In a scathing analysis of the UK prime minister’s approach, Gen Lord Richards of Herstmonceux said Cameron’s approach seemed “more about the Notting Hill liberal agenda rather than statecraft”.


Lord Richards reportedly told author Sir Anthony Seldon that the prime minister had in 2012 rejected a “coherent military strategy” to take on the regime of Syria’s president, Bashar al-Assad, which would in his view have seen the Islamic extremists “squeezed out of existence”.

Lord Richards, who was chief of the defence staff from October 2010 to July 2013, is quoted as saying: “If they had the balls they would have gone through with it ... if they’d done what I’d argued, they wouldn’t be where they are with Isis.


“In Ukraine, as in Syria and Libya, there is a clear lack of strategy and statecraft. The problem is the inability to think things through. Too often it seems to be more about the Notting Hill liberal agenda rather than statecraft.”...

A Message to America


I am struggling to find the words this morning; mostly what I find is anger. I have two messages I want to deliver - one to America, and one to the American government, particularly the Democrats. I'll start with that one.



I was raised in a staunchly Democratic family. My mother worked hard within the party; though I was never told who to vote for, it was assumed that I would vote Democratic. For many years, I did. I will never again vote for a Democrat. I won't automatically vote for a Republican, but I will choose not to vote, sooner than cast a vote for a Democrat. As you, the Democratic party, have finished with Israel, I have finished with you.

The reality is very, very simple. The Iranians have repeatedly told you what they want - it is there in the chants, the burning flags. "Death to America" they scream out; "Death to Israel" is their battle cry


Their message is clear and so is your vote. Very simple - a vote FOR this Iran Deal is a VOTE against Israel, it is a vote in favor of the death of Israel....

Unknown armed men have been attacking ISIS women within Mosul, the largest city controlled by ISIS. Although ISIS controls large swathes of territory, it is far from pacified.


“An armed unknown group attacked one of the offices of Khansawomen’s organization of ISIS in the area of new Mosul,” media officer of the Democratic Kurdish Party in Mosul, Saeed Mamuzini told Al-Sumaria News on Sunday. “The attack led to the deaths of six female members of the organization. The women of ISIS are active in recruiting other women to work within the organization.”

He added “Last week three Khansa women were killed during an armed attack in the neighborhood of Babel in Mosul.”

The ­Khansa brigade is feared for its brutality. In Raqqa the brigade was reported to be using a device called ‘the biter’ to savage the breasts of women caught breastfeeding publicly or insufficiently veiled.

ISIS responds to any disobedience with harsh and immediate punishment. “ISIS armed men kidnapped 40 citizens from the public markets in the middle of Mosul for failure to grow their beards, in violation of ISIS instructions," a local source in Nineveh province told Al-Sumaria News on Sunday. "The fighters led the kidnapped citizens to one of the prisons."...

Project 2,996: We Remember 

Remember this iconic image of the terrible day in 2001?  Islamic Terrorists murdered almost 3,000 innocents,  as they attempted to bring New York, and America to its knees?  Among those 3,000 were First Responders: EMT, FireFighters, NYPD who rushed in to save as many lives as humanly possible.


Long time readers will know that I have shared more than a few profiles of those courageous Americans who gave their lives in Service; Americans who gave no thought to their own safety

Along with Keith, we lost 343 FDNY, 37 Police Officers of  New York Port Authority, 23 of NYPD and eight EMT's from private emergency medical services.

The number of  lives destroyed that day - on home soil - is almost unimaginable, but the losses continue..  As you read this, I guarantee that First Responders who escaped with their lives that day, continue to lose their tenacious battles and become part of the ongoing losses - legacy -  of 9/11...

Just about every day,  the men and women who managed to walk away from 9/11, years later succumb to the silent killer that infected/affected every single person there on 9/11 and on the pile in the following days, weeks and months:

Three 9/11 first responders died of cancer on the same day 27 Sep, 2014
Less than two weeks after the 13th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, three New York firefighters who worked at Ground Zero died of cancer, all on the same day, the Fire Department of New York said.

Lt. Howard Bischoff, 58, and firefighters Robert Leaver, 56, and Daniel Heglund, 58, died within hours of one another Monday. Bischoff had colon cancer, Leaver had leukemia and Heglund had esophageal cancer. Many believe the diseases were related to their time serving as first responders at the World Trade Center in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. FDNY officialsy 850 firefighters and ambulance workers at the scene have been diagnosed with cancer since then, related to that work at Ground Zero.


"Losing three firefighters on the same day to WTC-related illnesses is a painful reminder that, 13 years later, we continue to pay a terrible price for the Department's heroic efforts on September 11th," Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said in a statement....

Unfortunately, these three are not unique.  It is recorded that since 9/11 we have lost  approximately 1,800 souls as a direct result of the toxic environment on the pile.

Each year,  9/11 Rescue Workers and Friends put together a video to Honor and Remember  those First Responders who fight their last battle.  Take a look at 2014

On the 9/11 Rescue Workers and Friends site its is stressed just how important it is for this Bill to pass.  PLEASE go here, and read a brief  history of the bill, plus simple instructions on how you can help persuade any undecided politicians that approving this Bill is the only morally acceptable response from them.

In April 2015 I shared a video that puts a human face onto the critical reasons US politicians should recognise that they must re-authorise the Zadroga Bill.  To do anything else is morally reprehensible.

To most people, those names, those faces of our First Responders Survivors, who years later succumb to the environmental impact of that infamous day, will never be known.  They are mourned  by those who love them, and acknowledged by those who stood the line with them on 9/11, and still fight on against the diseases they gained from that day....

Among the madness of that day, this woman's picture became iconic.  Marcy Borders was an anonymous civilian  - a bank employee - whose picture demonstrated that the horrors of 9/11 showed no favour:  Men, women, children; civilian or official First Responders; the murderers showed no mercy.. Marcy Borders died a couple of weeks ago from stomach cancer.


That Marcy Borders,  and so many other survivors of that day, continue to pass away all these years later, should be a graphic constant  reminder to the politicians *debating* the re-authorisation of the Zadroga Bill.  This latest iteration of the Bill under debate  has a provision in it,  that limits the deserved  - earned - help to ANY of the Fallen to oh, 25 years as this latest debate suggests, is beyond absurd.  For the survivors of 9/11, who live with damaged bodies and minds, time is meaningless, and the Zadroga Bill guarantees should not be limited to any time frame.  Period.


Last month the New York  Post had this:

The rising toll of Ground Zero responders and others afflicted with 9/11-linked cancers has hit 3,700.

The staggering tally of those suffering cancers certified by the feds as 9/11-related includes FDNY members (1,100), cops and other Ground Zero responders (2,134), and survivors such as downtown workers and residents (467). Many have more than one type of cancer.

The FDNY’s chief medical officer, Dr. David Prezant, said over 2,100 firefighters and EMS personnel have retired on disability with World Trade Center-related illnesses, mostly lung disease and cancer, since 9/11.
The grim toll includes 109 FDNY responders who have died from WTC-linked illnesses, 44 of them from cancer.

Research has found thyroid, colon, prostate and blood cancers more prevalent among FDNY members who served at Ground Zero than those who did not, a spokesman said.....

People are dying, from those who fled as the buildings collapsed to those who ran in to help, and the many who worked at the site for weeks afterward. And instead of doing all it can for those who are still living, Congress is making a tragic situation even worse.

The 9/11 World Trade Center Health Program expires this fall. It's one of two programs -- the other is the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund -- under the Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act. The act became law in early 2011, and had a five-year window.

Time's almost up.

Soon, those who are ill won't know whether their medication and treatment will be covered. By next year, the funding will dry up altogether. David Howley, a former NYPD officer who worked at Ground Zero and has fought neck cancer and other illnesses, is among many now fighting Congress just to continue the programs that kept him alive.


Howley shouldn't have to fight this fight. It's time for the absurdity to end. Congress must make the act permanent -- so the tens of thousands of victims battling disease and injury from the 9/11 attacks can stop making the trek to Washington to plea with lawmakers.


It must become our battle, too.


More than 33,000 people are ill or injured related to the Sept. 11 attacks, and more than 70,000 are being monitored for possible symptoms and illnesses. There are residents from all 50 states, and all but six congressional districts.


They include your neighbors, friends, family members and heroes...

Detainee Transfer Announced

September 17, 2015



The Department of Defense announced today the repatriation of Younis Abdurrahman Chekkouri from the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay to the Government of Morocco.


As directed by the president's Jan. 22, 2009, executive order, the interagency Guantanamo Review Task Force conducted a comprehensive review of this case. As a result of that review, which examined a number of factors, including security issues, Chekkouri was unanimously approved for transfer by the six departments and agencies comprising the task force.


In accordance with statutory requirements, the secretary of defense informed Congress of the United States' intent to transfer this individual and of the secretary's determination that this transfer meets the statutory standard.

The United States is grateful to the Government of Morocco for its willingness to support ongoing U.S. efforts to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility. [emphasis mine] The United States coordinated with the Government of Morocco to ensure this transfer took place consistent with appropriate security and humane treatment measures.

Today, 115 detainees remain at Guantanamo Bay.

Years after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, victims are still dying – some were emergency responders whose cancer is believed to be related to toxins in the air that day, and others are distraught because their relatives never made it out of the Twin Towers.


“They didn’t all die on 9/11,” said Connie Agostini in an interview last year after a plaque was dedicated to her brother, North Hudson Regional firefighter Robert Agostini, who died of lung cancer in 2013.


While the media has reported on cases of emergency responders contracting cancer, less visible are people who have died under unusual circumstances that may have been related to the attacks, including the grieving relatives of those who died in the towers....

Detainee Transfer Announced

The Department of Defense announced today the transfer of Abdul Shalabi from the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay to the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.


On June 15, a Periodic Review Board consisting of representatives from the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, Justice, and State; the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence determined continued law of war detention of Shalabi does not remain necessary to protect against a continuing significant threat to the security of the United States. As a result of that review, which examined a number of factors, including security issues, Shalabi was recommended for transfer by consensus of the six departments and agencies comprising the Periodic Review Board.


In accordance with statutory requirements, the secretary of defense informed Congress of the United States' intent to transfer this individual and of his determination that this transfer meets the statutory standard.


The Periodic Review Board process was established by the president's March 7, 2011 Executive Order (EO) 13567.


The United States is grateful to the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for its willingness to support ongoing U.S. efforts to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility. The United States coordinated with the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to ensure this transfer took place consistent with appropriate security and humane treatment measures.


Today, 114 detainees remain at Guantanamo Bay.
